£600,000 Printer Investment Boosts Growth At Peterborough Label Manufacturer.

A Peterborough-based labels manufacturer is increasing capacity and annual growth following a £600,000 investment in new printing and label manufacturing equipment.

AA Labels has installed a £400,000 HP Indigo WS6800 Digital Press and two AB Graphics (ABG) International Ltd 330 sheet label converting machines, at a cost of £100,000 each, as part of continuing investment plans to develop its production site to full operational capacity.

The company is also making plans for a further six figure investment in an additional roll label converting machine this year to keep up with customer demand.

It will be a high throughput producer of labels on rolls, taking its total number of roll label converters to four and enabling improved production flexibility, fast order fulfilment and increased output.

The HP Indigo WS6800 Digital Press has already streamlined production and increased productivity, while providing high resolution printing, intelligent colour matching and reduced production waste.

The speed of the press, at up to 30 metres per minute, will significantly contribute to an increase in production output and further reduce order fulfilment times.

The two ABG Omega 350 model converting machines will increase capacity for labels on sheet formats, improving production quality, capacity, accuracy and speed, while expanding its range of sheet formats and label shapes and sizes.

The company now has a total of five converting lines for sheeted label production.

Ian Axelsen, Business Development Manager at AA Labels, comments:

“This is a significant investment for AA Labels and is designed to maximise capacity within our existing site. In terms of production staff operating the equipment, we are now up to a team of 15 within the factory and warehouse on one day-time shift. We now plan to increase capacity further in-line with demand with the introduction of additional work shifts.

“The introduction of the HP Indigo press is significant in terms of capability and the press represents arguably the vanguard technology in quality for short-run and variable digital label printing. The addition of orange and violet to the standard CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key/Black) enables sophisticated printing of flesh tones and is also helpful in colour matching to customer spot-colours.

“The ability to print white onto clear and metallic materials further extends the print options available and the ability to produce metallic colours by printing onto metallic label face-stocks is also a great feature, producing bright and vibrant metallic effects in any colour.

“AA Labels continues to grow in excess of 20% each year in volume terms, with the printed label part of the business growing faster still and almost doubling year-on-year. It is this continuous investment in people and technology that contributes to the expansion of services and winning of market share for the business.”

In addition to continuous improvement in manufacturing equipment, AA Labels is also driving improvement in the production processes; its developers are currently beta-testing an improved version of its management information system, which will deliver many customer benefits.

AA Labels, based near Orton Longueville in Peterborough, specialises in designing, producing and printing labels for every major market and industry sector. Established in 2006, the business manufactures and distributes plain and printed labels in a range of materials, adhesives and finishes for commercial, industrial, specialist and home use throughout Europe and further afield with customers in Canada, Argentina, America, Australia and Hong Kong.
